Through this very steep economic downturn, a few companies in Silicon Valley, like MILESTONE, who is a specialized IT service provider for dozens of the area’s technology firms, have been hiring employees more than most other industries. But even with this bit of positive news published last month in the San Francisco Chronicle, many area families and seniors are still continuing to struggle to pay for food, rent, utilities, and medicine. During the holiday season, we remember our family and friends with holiday wishes and gifts. But in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, approximately 207,000 people per month are hoping to receive a more essential gift: food.
That’s why Milestone Technologies, Inc. partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank this holiday season to help provide this gift.
In stride with participating companies like Brocade, SanDisk, and Oracle, MILESTONE began collecting canned food and monetary donations last October. MILESTONE’s Director of Accounting and Second Harvest Food Drive Coordinator Cecilia Tran was helping get the word out about her son’s school’s Second Harvest Food Drive to the employees at MILESTONE. “The interest and conversation quickly morphed into MILESTONE running their own Second Harvest Food Drive,” said Ms. Tran. “To make this food drive more exciting, MILESTONE President and Founder Prem Chand pledged to match 100% of their employees’ donations; both in cash and in food poundage,” Ms. Tran added.
The employees quickly met the goal for monetary donations. Bringing in 500 pounds of canned food proved to be a bigger challenge. Employees at the corporate MILESTONE office weren’t the only ones involved. Employees working at client sites across the United States made donations and even surprised the MILESTONE organizers by sending a huge pallet of canned food. Shortly before the official beginning of the holiday season, MILESTONE’s canned food poundage goal was met. As pledged, MILESTONE President, Prem Chand matched all of the cash contributions and poundage of canned goods donated by his generous employees.
MILESTONE and its employees are a large part of our local community. Their enthusiasm for participating in the Second Harvest Food Drive is a great corporate model for more companies to consider adopting. Not only was this fun for the company, but it feels great to meet and exceed expectations especially for those people who really need and appreciate the helping hand.
